Lighting the Way: Dara's Journey of Transformation and Service

Dara worshiping Jesus

This month, we celebrate a story of resilience, love, and purpose—a story of Dara, a young man whose life was radically changed by the love of Jesus and the support of the Youth Development Center (YDC) community.

Dara’s story begins in the heart of Cambodia, where his early life was marked by hardship and isolation. Born into a Buddhist family, he faced the painful realities of growing up without the support of his parents. His father, struggling with mental health issues, abandoned him, leaving Dara to be raised by his grandmother. Despite these challenges, Dara persevered, even as he searched for love and meaning in the wrong places. Working in a restaurant and following his father's troubled path, he felt a deep emptiness in his heart.

Everything changed when Dara discovered the love of Jesus at the YDC. Through their community, he found a sense of belonging and a purpose that filled the void he had carried for so long. He went on to graduate from Discipleship Training School (DTS) with Youth with a Mission (YWAM). It was during this time that he experienced a profound spiritual awakening.

I don’t need to find anything else to satisfy my heart or try to find love from something else because I know now that Jesus loves me

Dara’s transformation was deeply influenced by Vuthy, the leader of the YDC, who has been a father figure to him for the past six years. "Vuthy provides me with invaluable guidance, encouragement, and support in my life and for my future," Dara says. "He consistently steps up as a leader in every circumstance and walks alongside me through challenges."

"Dara is one of my boys," Vuthy shares. "I’ve been raising him at the YDC, and he became a Christian through our program here."

After completing DTS, Dara felt called by God to return to the YDC, where he now serves as the worship leader, music teacher, and soccer coach. His passion for worship and sharing Christ’s love has become central to the YDC’s mission. Beyond these roles, he is instrumental in evangelism, English classes, and translating for visiting teams.

Reflecting on his time at YDC, Dara describes one of his most cherished memories:

One of the most important memories in my life was growing up as a nonbeliever and coming to know God through my time at YDC.

Bold Vision and Purpose

I hope to see the music program begin with a strong foundation rooted in God. I also hope to see it continue to grow and thrive in the future. This program can impact kids not only by teaching them how to play instruments and develop their skills but also by helping them grow into worship leaders for God

One of the most exciting milestones at the YDC is the completion of a second classroom building, funded by Village Reach and our generous donors, finished on November 22nd. This new space includes a dedicated music room, which will serve as a hub for worship and skill development. We are praying and raising awareness for the provision of instruments to equip this space, trusting in God’s faithfulness to meet this need.
